Transmitting herpes is a concern of most ethical people who have acquired herpes. Herpes transmission generally occurs from skin to skin contact.
There are sporadic reports of infections that have occured through contact with inanimate objects, but that is rare and often not substantiated.
Transmission most often occurs when contact happens during an outbreak. However, herpes can be transmitted when no symptoms are present. This is known as "asymptomatic shedding" and is well documented. If you are infected with genital herpes, you are putting others at risk with intimate contact whether symptoms are present or not.
